Imagine that you are doing a project on why people in Zetland should study literature. You have found some data on the subject – the results оf the opinion polls (see the pie chart below). Comment on the data in the pie chart and give your opinion on the subject of the project.

Write 200–250 words.

Use the following plan:

– make an opening statement on the subject of the project; 
– select and report 2–3 facts; 
– make 1–2 comparisons where relevant and give your comments; 
– outline a problem that one can face studying literature and suggest a way of solving it; 
– conclude by giving and explaining your opinion on the importance of studying literature.

People in Zetland understand the importance of studying literature, but they understand it in different ways. For some, it is a way of distracting themselves from everyday life, while for others it is a way of realizing what human nature is.

Almost 40% of respondents say they would like to widen their horizons. For about a fifth of people living in Zetland, literature is entertainment to forget worries, and for another fifth it a way to learn about the past. It is noteworthy that although most would like to widen their horizons, four times fewer people are willing to discuss books with friends. And those who want to learn about the past are one and a half times as many as those who would like to understand human nature. We can conclude that, apparently, when people talk about widening horizons, they don't put anything specific into the concept.

It is good that there are people who want to learn about the past. However, novels and short stories tend to be very much fiction. Therefore, one cannot always believe what writers say about the past. For that, you need to read history books. This is what I would like to recommend to those who seek answers to questions about the past in fiction.

Of course, studying literature is very useful. It enriches our inner world, makes us more interesting people to talk to, and teaches us accurate expression. Maybe the reason we read books is not even that important. The important thing is that we read them.
