Global warming is the most important challenge for humanity in our time. Observations of the Earth's surface temperature have shown that over the 20th century the average temperature has risen by almost one degree Celsius. The increase may seem insignificant, but it is not. Even a small increase in average temperature can cause glaciers to melt, which in turn can lead to rising water levels in the world's oceans. Huge areas could be flooded and many species could be destroyed.
