Imagine that you are doing a project on why people in Russia learn English. You have found some data on the subject – the results of the opinion polls (see the pie chart below). Comment on the data in the table and give your opinion on the subject of the project.

Write 200–250 words.

Use the following plan:

– make an opening statement on the subject of the project; 
– select and report 2–3 facts; 
– make 1–2 comparisons where relevant and give your comments; 
– outline a problem that can arise while learning English and suggest a way of solving it; 
– conclude by giving and explaining your opinion on what motivates people to learn English.

Today English is the most important language of international communication. The success of a business or a work of art in the world is impossible without English. In Russia, too, many people today are learning this language, though for different reasons.

The pie chart shows that one third of Russians are learning English to communicate with people of other nationalities. Slightly less, but also almost a third open English textbooks in order to advance in their careers.

A significant proportion of those who want to learn English do so to engage in English-speaking culture. And it seems quite natural that those who want to read books in English are one third fewer than those who want to watch English movies. This is easily explained by the worldwide decline in the popularity of reading. Finally, only 6% of respondents cited prevention of Alzheimer's disease as a reason for learning the language. Obviously, these are older people who want to keep a clear mind into old age.

In my opinion, language learning is a serious and time-consuming undertaking. So you should not rely on advertising courses that promise to learn English in three months.

And to conclude, it should be noted how important motivation is. If a person understands that the knowledge of English will help him move up in his professional career, he will find time to study. It is no coincidence that almost a third of Russians learn English in order to climb the career ladder.
