My sister wants to be a pop star.

My sister Lena and I are very different. I have always been interested in the exact sciences, and my sister has shown little interest in studies. I am rather withdrawn, and my sister has many friends. I like silence and Lena is crazy about loud music. It's hard for me to explain this because we grew up in the same family and were brought up by the same parents. Apparently, there are some hidden factors that influence the development of personality, not just the environment.

But I can’t say that Lena has no hobbies. On the contrary, she has dreamed for several years of becoming a famous singer. There are posters of popular American singers hanging in her room, and she already sees herself singing on the same stage with them. She thinks she is a star and is waiting for graduation so she can go to Moscow and prove her abilities to everyone. She does sing a lot, but neither my parents nor I can appreciate her talents. You need to be an expert and have a good musical background for that. Lena says her friends are thrilled with her singing, but I wouldn't believe them. Maybe they're just saying that because they don’t want to offend her.

But even if my sister has talent, I doubt she will succeed. She truly believes that her life will turn into a magical fairy tale once she gets to Moscow, and that she will conquer the capital and sign autographs. But I'm convinced that talent alone is not enough. It takes very serious work to develop this talent. Lena imagines the life of a pop star as endless entertainment and does not understand how much effort and time stars put in to achieve popularity. She doesn't know that stars start taking sleeping pills because they lose sleep due to nervous exhaustion. She thinks pop stars live off the fat of the land.

My parents think the same way I do. They work as engineers and know very well that there is no such thing as easy money. Famous people deserve their popularity through hard work and effort. But Lena doesn't even think about the fact that her talent might not be spotted or that there are dozens of other girls who sing better than her. Her parents wonder what she will do in case she fails. In their opinion, it would be much more reasonable to get a good education and find a good job first, and then think about a singing career. Parents know that real life is cruel and losers are left with nothing. For every success story there are a thousand stories of failure.

As for me, I actually find a career as a singer very unreliable. Success with the public depends on fashion, which is very capricious. I know a lot of stars from the past who are not famous today. Popularity has to be maintained all the time, and very often stars deliberately get into scandalous situations to get the public's attention. I'm not sure my sister is ready for that. Also, I don't really appreciate the popularity of pop stars at all. What good do they do for society? You need to be skilled to achieve fame, but it would be much better to put that effort into creating new drugs or technology.

I think my sister is too naive, but I can understand her. I'm five years older than she is, and I've already gotten over the belief that everything depends on me alone. I used to think so in the past. Today I understand that there are such things as luck and coincidence and the limits of a person's own ability. Let my sister live in her dreams, because in a few years her youth will be over and her illusions will dissipate.
