Are people and animals friends?

When I was 7 years old, my parents took me to the zoo for the first time. It was in a nearby town, so we went by car. That day I saw different animals, lions, tigers, hippos, and of course I liked it a lot. It seemed to me that the wild animals in the zoo were happy because they were taken care of. Now I'm 17 years old, and I have a different opinion. I don't think a zoo is the best place for animals that are used to living in freedom. I actually believe that man should not intrude into wildlife.

I don't like the fact that animals have been plucked from their natural habitat and brought to the big city, where now crowds of idlers come to gawk at them. We must treat living creatures responsibly. I know people have said since ancient times that you shouldn't do to others what you don't want them to do to you. I would write those words on the gates of every zoo. Also, it seems to me that the animals are not being cared for as well as I imagined when I was a kid. The new food, the new climate, the fenced-in area, it's completely different from the conditions in which the animals used to live.

I concede that sometimes animals should be removed from their habitat and transported to another place. This should be done when animals are in danger of extinction. Then, under artificial conditions, they could be helped to increase their population, but only to return the animals to the wild. However, today's zoos keep animals only for the entertainment of visitors. Sometimes children are allowed to feed rabbits or birds, but the food must be bought at the zoo. Maybe this is how they instill a love for animals, but in my opinion, it's just about making money. Also, it's obvious that animals are simply annoyed by the daily attention of people.

I don't like zoos, but I'm not sure they should be closed. After all, nowhere else can people see lions and tigers, hippos and rhinos, ostriches and peacocks. I am sure that even in a zoo, human and animal contact is possible, and we can become kinder as a result. In my opinion, zoo owners should simply pay more attention to animals. For example, limit visiting hours or give the animals more territory so they can feel more freedom.

When I have kids, I might take them to the zoo too. But then I'll explain to them what I realized when I got older. We don't have pets in our house, but if my kids wanted one, I wouldn't mind. I think it would even be helpful. That way my kids would learn to take responsibility for others. A child or teenager needs to understand that you can't always go to a party if you're alone at home and there's no one to walk the dog. There are not only fun things to do in life, but responsibilities as well.

The way we treat animals shows our humanity. I am horrified to read the news about the abuse of dogs and cats. I wouldn't mind if such people were not only fined, but also put in jail. Sure, people think of themselves first, but don't animal lives have value? I hope that one day zoos will stop being a show for bored city dwellers, and become a place where people and animals can truly be friends. But for that to happen, people need to change. I don't know what my future profession will be, but I wouldn't mind devoting my life to animal protection.

A) According to the author, he:

1. always thought of zoos as places where animals are happy.
2. was surprised at how many animals were there on his first day at the zoo.
3. changed his opinion about zoos when he got older.
4. did not want to go to the zoo, but his parents insisted.

B) What does the author think of modern zoos?

1. In modern zoos, the conditions for the animals are as close to their usual habitat as possible.
2. Modern zoos cannot be called a good place for animals.
3. New food and a new climate are even better for animals than their usual habitat.
4. It should be written on the gate of every zoo that animals were treated better in ancient times.

C) What is the author's opinion in paragraph 3?

1. Any human intrusion into wildlife is a crime.
2. If animals become extinct, there is nothing humans can do about it.
3. It's great that children in zoos can feed animals.
4. The animals in the zoos are tired of people.

D) According to the author, what should be done to make zoos better?

1. Human-animal contact could be limited.
2. We need to do a better job of monitoring the food of the animals.
3. If a person wants to see lions and tigers, he must go to see them in the wild.
4. Zoos cannot be made better, they should all be closed down.

E) What does the author say about his children that he will have in the future?

1. He doesn't like zoos, so he won't take his children there.
2. If the children wanted a pet, he would be against it because children are irresponsible.
3. Pets could teach his children to take life more seriously.
4. His children would be unlikely to want pets because going to parties is more fun.

F) Why does the author think it is important to treat animals well?

1. Because only animals can make people change.
2. Because animal lives are valuable too and treating animals well makes us human.
3. Because you can go to jail for treating animals badly.
4. Because in the future, being an animal advocate will be an in-demand profession.

G) What is the main idea of the text?

1. People should treat animals responsibly.
2. Zoos make money from people's desire to look at animals.
3. Children should be taken to the zoo so that they may become kinder.
4. If you make an effort, zoos can create the same conditions for animals as in the wild.
